Department of Diaspora Studies 
 
The main purpose of the Department of Diaspora Studies activities is to create
necessary analytical resources for the study of modern Diaspora.
 
The Department pursues the following objectives:
 
  • to explore the economic, social and spiritual potential of the various parts of the Armenian population worldwide
     
  • to seek ways of unifying the nation in the face of both nationwide and specific issues
     
  • to develop strategies for preserving and strengthening the national identity

On August 1-15, within the framework of “The Armenians

in their Own and Foreign Environments: Comparative

Ethno-Sociological Studies” project, five researchers of

Department of Diaspora Studies left for Paris to study

the local Armenian community. Our colleagues carried 

out research studies based on sociological methods.

It is intended to summarize the results, development

and scientific analysis.

On  June16, Yuri V.Harutyunyan’s book was published

at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of

the National Academy of Sciences in Yerevan.

The title of book was “Armenians of Russia.

Ethno-sociological research”. Mr. Harutyunyan is

ethno-sociologist, doctor of Historical Sciences, corresponding

member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, foreign member of 

the National Academy of Sciences of NAS RA, chief consultant

of Department of Diaspora Studies.

On June26, the renowned scientist

Yuri V. Harutyunyan passed away (1929-2016).

Mr. Harutyunyan was the Head of ethno-sociological

group, which operates at the Center for Interethnic

Relations of Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of RAS, as well as

doctor of historical sciences, professor, adviser in Russian Academy

of Sciences, corresponding member of Russian Academy of Sciences,

foreign member of National Academy of Sciences of NAS RA,

member of Viennese Social Science Research and Documentation Center.

On November 7, a meeting was held with 

the Director of the Armenian Diaspora Studies

Center of Haigazian University Andranik Dakesian.

During the meeting, the participants discussed

issues related to the two institutions, as well as

reached agreements for further cooperation.

defended his doctoral dissertation at

the Archeology and Ethnography Institute

of the National Academy of Sciences. 

The subject was “Migration and Ethno-Social Processes in Armenian Cities”.

On June 12, 2014, a meeting was held

with the Head of the Glendale City Council

Zareh Sinanyan in Yerevan. During the discussion, researchers

from the Diaspora Studies Department Suzanna Barseghyan,

Lusine Tanajyan and Sona Nersisyan presented the results

of studies of the Armenian community of Los Angeles.
