On October 2-24, within the framework of “The Armenians

in their Own and Foreign Environments: Comparative

Ethno-Sociological Studies” program, three researchers

of Department of Diaspora Studies visited Los Angeles to study

the local Armenian community. Our colleagues carried

research studies based on sociologicalmethods.

It is intended to summarize the results, development

and scientific analysis.

On July 23, 2013,

there was held a meeting-discussion led by the Diaspora Minister of Armenia Hranush Hakobyan

amid the implementers of the thematic researches on Diaspora Studies provided by the Ministry of Diaspora.

The Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies NAS RA Ruben Safrastyan,

the Head of the Iranian Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies NAS RA Vahan Bayburdyan,

the Deputy Director of the Institute of Literature NAS RA Vardan Devrikyan,

the Head of the Department of Diaspora Studies of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography NAS RA Ruben Karapetyan,

the experts of Scientific Educational Foundation “Noravank” also participated in the discussion.

The discourse focused on the books topics to be published within the frame of the theme “Ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Genocide”.

It is planned to publish a series of works related to the churches of the Western Armenia, its cultural heritage,

Western Armenian ethnography and folklore, the thoughts of the remarkable political and state figures about the Genocide,

the collection of works of the writers who became the victims of the Genocide, picture books,

the memories of the Genocide survivals and their families within 1915-1923 and other valuable works.

The Department of Diaspora Studies has welcomed Svetlana Lurie, Doctor of Cultural Studies,

a leading researcher of the Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences.

She made a presentation of her book “The Empire –  a Values-based and Ethno-Psychological Approach)”, published in 2012.

On June 10 and 17, 2013, at the Department of Diaspora Studies,

there was a workshop held on “Ethnographic Research: Methodology, Field Work and Data Analysis”. 

Gayane Shagoyan, an ethnographic researcher of the Modern Ethnography Department of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography

led the workshop. Methodological similarities and differences between ethnography and sociology, stages of ethnographic studies and their features,

the application of methods by the examples of research conducted by Shagoyan were discussed with the researchers of the Diaspora Studies Department.

On June 7, 2013,

at the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, the Department of Cultural Studies

there was a workshop held on “The symbolic analysis of text”.  

 Sergey Vardazaryan, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Associated Professor, Head of the Department of Cultural Studies led the workshop.

The researchers of the Department of Diaspora Studies participated in the seminar. It focused on the application of the principles of Semiotics in the Content Analysis of texts and words.

Councils methodological seminar themed,

" Content analysis (content analysis) description of the method

and application".

On May 3, 2013,

at the Department of Diaspora Studies there was a workshop held on “Community Development”.

Acting Head of the UN Mission in Armenia, sociologist Hrachya Kazhoyan led the workshop. 

The researchers of the Department of Diaspora Studies participated in the seminar. 

On the example of the scientific community the team implemented the community mapping during the workshop.  

H. Kazhoyan also made a presentation of his handbook “The Community Development” published on 2009.
